GIF Optimizer

Rewrite GIFs so they store only what they need — same pixels, same animation, smaller file. Starts in lossless mode.

What the GIF optimizer changes — and what it doesn’t

In Lossless mode the optimizer only changes the encoding. Open the result in any viewer and every frame is identical to the original. Here is what it does behind the scenes:

Optimization What it does
Frame croppingEach frame after the first stores only the rectangle that changed.
Transparency optimizationInside that rectangle, unchanged pixels become transparent so LZW sees long runs of one value.
Disposal methodsChooses per frame whether the viewer keeps or clears the previous frame — needed for transparent animations.
Shared color tableOne global palette instead of a 768-byte table in every frame, when the colors fit.
Duplicate framesIdentical consecutive frames are merged, adding their delays together.
Fresh LZW encodingRe-encodes the image data with a clean LZW stream.

What it never touches in Lossless mode: colors, dimensions, number of distinct frames, frame delays and the loop count.

GIF optimizer vs GIF compressor

Optimization is free quality-wise but its gains depend entirely on how the GIF was made. Compression goes further by allowing controlled changes.

  • Optimize when the GIF must stay pixel-exact — product screenshots, UI demos, diagrams, pixel art.
  • Compress (Balanced or Strong) for video clips and memes, where small color changes are hard to see but save 10–30%.
  • Hit a number with the file size reducer when a platform has a hard limit.

If the optimized file would be larger than your original — which happens with GIFs that were already optimized — the tool gives you the original back, so optimizing never makes things worse. For a full workflow from video to finished GIF, read how to optimize GIFs for the web.

GIF optimizer: questions

What does a GIF optimizer do?

It rewrites how the GIF is stored without changing what it looks like: only changed areas are saved per frame, unchanged pixels become transparent, identical frames are merged and color tables are shared. The decoded animation is pixel-for-pixel the same.

Is GIF optimization the same as compression?

Optimization is the lossless part of compression. “Compressing” a GIF usually also includes lossy steps — fewer colors, lossy LZW, smaller dimensions, fewer frames — that make the file much smaller but change the image slightly.

Why did the optimizer not make my GIF smaller?

Your GIF was probably optimized when it was created (ffmpeg, gifsicle and most GIF sites do this). In that case you keep the original file, and the next step is the Balanced level, which is lossy but usually invisible.

Which GIFs benefit most from optimization?

GIFs exported frame-by-frame without optimization: screen recordings, UI demos, charts, slideshows and animations saved from design tools or scripts. In our tests an unoptimized screen recording shrank by 79% with no visible change.

Can I optimize many GIFs at once?

Yes. Drop up to 20 GIFs, keep the Lossless level, press Compress all and download everything as one ZIP.
