6 ways to reduce GIF size, ranked

Start at the top; each step costs a little more quality than the one before.

  1. Lossless optimization. Store only what changes between frames. No visible difference. Huge wins on unoptimized exports, nothing on GIFs that are already optimized.
  2. Merge duplicate frames. Consecutive identical frames become one longer frame. No visible difference.
  3. Lossy compression. The Balanced level allows tiny color shifts that let the data compress better. Usually invisible.
  4. Fewer colors. 128 or 64 colors instead of 256. Gradients and skin tones may band slightly.
  5. Smaller dimensions. 75% size keeps ~56% of the pixels; 50% keeps 25%. The GIF gets smaller on screen.
  6. Fewer frames. Drop 1 in 4, 3 or 2 frames. Timing is kept, motion gets choppier.

How much each step saves

Measured with this tool on two typical GIFs — a 199 KB video clip converted with ffmpeg and a 50 KB cartoon loop. Each row is one setting on its own:

Setting Video clip Cartoon loop Quality cost
Lossless optimization0% (already optimized)−6%None
Lossy 40−3%−31%Invisible
Lossy 80 (Balanced)−14%−42%Barely visible
128 colors−15%−6%Slight banding
64 colors−29%−24%Banding on gradients
Scale 75%−7%−3%Smaller picture
Scale 50%−39%−30%Much smaller picture
Drop 1 in 3 frames−33%−34%Slightly choppy
Drop 1 in 2 frames−49%−47%Choppy

Notice that a mild 75% scale saves little on its own: resampling creates new in-between colors, which cancels part of the gain. Combine it with a lossy level, or go straight to 50%. When you just need to get under a number, let the GIF file size reducer choose for you.

Reduce GIF size: questions

What is the fastest way to reduce GIF size?

Load the GIF and use the Balanced level — it is applied automatically to a single GIF. If that is not enough, go to Strong, then lower the size to 75% or 50%, then drop 1 in 2 frames. Each step shows the new file size immediately.

Which reduces GIF size more: fewer colors or smaller dimensions?

It depends on the GIF. On our test clips, halving the dimensions saved 30–48% and going to 64 colors saved 24–29%. Flat cartoons gain more from lossy compression; video clips gain more from fewer colors and smaller dimensions.

Can I reduce GIF size without making it blurry?

Yes — Lossless, Balanced and color reduction do not blur anything, because the dimensions stay the same. Scaling down is the only step that reduces sharpness, and only in the sense that there are fewer pixels.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIF stores every frame with at most 256 colors and simple LZW compression. Long clips, high frame rates, large dimensions and noisy video (grain, dithering) all multiply the size. A 10-second, 30 fps, 800 px wide GIF can easily pass 20 MB.

Should I convert my GIF to MP4 or WebP instead?

If the place you post it accepts video, MP4 or animated WebP is usually 5–10× smaller. GIF is still the format that works everywhere — chat emoji, email, README files, forums — which is when reducing the GIF itself is the right call.
